Eligible military retirees may have overseas TRICARE options, but enrollment, Medicare status, providers and costs require individual confirmation. Moving abroad is not a reason to assume all care is covered or that Medicare Part B can be dropped.
Start with your eligibility and plan
TRICARE’s retiree-moving-overseas FAQ identifies Select Overseas and TRICARE For Life Overseas as relevant options and directs retirees to update DEERS. Ask TRICARE to confirm the appropriate plan and enrollment steps for each household member; spouses and dependents may not share the same circumstances.
Review Medicare Part B before changing anything
The official overseas FAQ says retirees with Medicare must keep Part B for the stated TRICARE coverage pathway, even though Medicare generally does not cover overseas care. Confirm your individual status with TRICARE and Medicare before changing enrollment or assuming a premium disappears from your budget.
Check the current Philippine provider process
Use TRICARE’s overseas plan guidance and the overseas contractor to verify provider requirements, covered services, any authorization requirements and the claims process for the care you need. Do not treat a hospital website, professional introduction or local recommendation as proof of TRICARE status. Reconfirm before treatment and keep provider and plan questions separate.
Budget your actual costs
Obtain the costs relevant to your plan, category and care: premiums or enrollment fees where applicable, deductibles, cost-shares, prescriptions and any services outside coverage. Do not enter zero for healthcare simply because you have TRICARE. Use net pension income carefully so premiums are not counted twice if already deducted.
Plan access and documentation
Identify the facility and clinician, ask how payment and claims are handled, and retain required documentation through the official process. Test the practical journey from your candidate home. Coverage does not guarantee a nearby appointment, direct billing or a particular response time.
Questions Americans ask
Can I stop Medicare Part B because I live in the Philippines?
Do not do so based on a relocation website. TRICARE’s overseas guidance identifies Part B as required for the stated Medicare-related pathway; confirm your own status officially.
Does TRICARE mean overseas healthcare costs are zero?
No. Confirm the relevant premiums, deductibles, cost-shares and exclusions.
Does a hospital listing prove TRICARE eligibility or certification?
No. Verify through the official TRICARE process and contractor.
