Military retired pay overseas: prepare the cash-flow plan.

DFAS and banking questions for U.S. military retirees considering a Philippines move, with a net-income budget checklist.

Updated October 13, 2026 · Educational planning guide
THE SHORT ANSWER

Use actual net retired pay and confirm the payment arrangement directly with DFAS and your bank. A foreign address does not make fees, withholding or household obligations disappear.

01

Use the amount that reaches your spending plan

Start with your actual pay statement and the deductions relevant to you. Allow for taxes appropriately and distinguish gross retired pay from cash available for living. Use only income already payable; potential benefits, employment or withdrawals deserve separate verification.

02

Confirm the account arrangement

DFAS publishes domestic and international direct-deposit information. International options depend on eligible locations and account arrangements. Confirm the process and accepted documentation with DFAS. This website does not claim every Philippine account qualifies or that a transfer will be available on a fixed timetable.

03

Maintain access from abroad

Ask your bank about residence overseas, contact details, account access and authentication. Check fees and conversion arrangements. Test a small transfer and keep a backup plan before relying on one route for the entire household budget. Use official account channels rather than sending bank details to a property form.

04

Keep household obligations visible

Include debts, survivor-related costs where applicable, health costs, retained U.S. expenses and travel. Where deductions already reduce your net income, avoid listing the same payment again as an expense. Discuss pay elections and individual tax questions with the appropriate authority or qualified adviser.

05

Stress-test without predicting benefits

The affordability tools use net entered income, spending and currency assumptions. Run a higher-cost scenario and assess accessible reserves. They do not calculate military retirement formulas, COLA, survivor entitlements or portfolio sustainability. Keep a confirmed income record beside your budget.

Questions Americans ask

Does the calculator use my military pay grade or years of service?

No. It uses the net income you enter; it is not a military retired-pay estimator.

Can I assume international direct deposit is available for any bank?

No. Check the current eligible arrangement with DFAS and the institution.

Should I use gross pay as spendable monthly income?

Use cash actually available after deductions and appropriate tax provision.
